NYPD Chief Ray Kelly Claims Minorities Support 'Stop and Frisk' Stops that Target Minorities

New York Police Department Commissioner Ray Kelly created the so-called "stop-and-frisk" policy, which targets mostly black and Latino men.

Even though the "stop-and-frisk" policy was ruled unconstitutional by U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin because of racial discrimination, noted The New York Times, Kelly defended the tactics in a recent interview with Playboy magazine.

Chief Kelly even went as far to claim that minorities like "stop-and-frisk," even though he was recently booed offstage at Brown University during his speech on "proactive policing," reported The Providence Journal (video below).

“Among the people, there’s no groundswell against stop-and-frisk, certainly not in minority communities," claimed Chief Kelly. "I’m there all the time. They want more proactive policing.”

“You might read something snarky on Twitter, but I could take you right now to 125th Street in Harlem and young men will stop me for my picture and give me a very favorable and friendly greeting,” added Chief Kelly. “They understand that we’re saving lives in their community, that they’re the ones at risk.”

However, a poll by The New York Timesshowed that 64 percent of New Yorkers and 80 percent of black people think the NYPD favors white people.

According to the New York Daily News, Chief Kelly also lashed out at New York City's Mayor-Elect Bill de Blasio in the same interview.

Chief Kelly claimed that de Blasio and other mayoral candidates pandered for votes by attacking "stop-and-frisk."

If true, this would contradict Chief Kelly's claim that "stop-and-frisk" is popular. After all, why would anyone pander for votes by attacking a popular NYPD tactic?

When asked by Playboy, “Do you think they were just full of s---?”

“Absolutely,” said Chief Kelly. “It just goes to show you what some politicians will do. They’ll say or do anything to get elected. I know all these people. They all claimed to be friends of mine until their mayoral campaigns.”
