NYC Teacher has Students Send Cards to Boyfriend in Prison

A New York City has been removed from her class and could be fired after it was revealed she had her class make Christmas cards, which she then sent to her boyfriend in prison.

The New York Daily News reports that 31-year-old Melissa Dean told her fifth-grade students that the cards would go to people who were lonely on the holidays. Instead, she sent them to her boyfriend, who is serving time for a felony weapons charge and violating an order of protection.

Prison guards discovered the package containing the 27 letters and told officials at Dean's school.

“It was bad judgment,” said the city’s Special Commissioner of Investigation Richard Condon. “She certainly did not have permission."

Dean is no longer teaching her class and is on desk duty.

“We are seeking her termination,” said Education Department spokeswoman Barbara Morgan.
