A Salem, New Hampshire, writer said that a barista's kind message on her coffee cup may have saved her life.
Bekah Georgy, who blogs about her experiences in struggling with anxiety, depression, and anorexia, recounted a story about how a simple message on her coffee cup turned an awful day around. In a post on The Mighty, Georgy said that she had just left a doctor's appointment and therapy session that left her feeling hopeless, and was struggling with suicidal thoughts.
A kind barista wrote, "Smile!!" on the iced coffee she had ordered, and Georgy said that the small gesture of positivity turned her day around. "You were just going about your job, unaware that writing a minuscule word on my drink would change my day and possibly my life," she said in the post, according to Little Things.
"I was filled with hopelessness, and my suicidal thoughts were getting worse," said Georgy. "When my anorexia is bad sometimes coffee is the only thing I can drink. But I was afraid to consume even coffee that day."
"If I hadn’t encountered that cup, I could have done more damage to myself that night," she continued. "When I read that word, I couldn’t help but smile, literally."
Georgy, who wears a feeding tube, has struggled with anorexia, anxiety, and depression for half of her life.
"Maybe you wrote 'smile' on my drink because you saw the feeding tube. Or maybe you could see past my fake smile because you’ve been where I am," Georgy mused. "Either way, I’m grateful. You didn’t have to make my order special. You could have treated me like another annoying customer. But you took that extra second to add some positivity to a life that’s been filled with so much negativity lately."
After Georgy shared her story, commenters online have reached out to express their support, and to open up to Georgy about their own struggles.
"I'm glad you found your smile today. Thank you for sharing," said one Facebook user.
"I can relate ... at work, people think I must be happy 24/7 ... but no one knows the issues I struggle with at home or on a daily basis," added another commenter.
Georgy said she hopes that by sharing the story, she will pass the kindness the barista showed her along to others.
"A simple act of kindness can mean the world to someone," she wrote. "It can provide hope for the hopeless."
