A Florida attorney who made his living aggressively pursuing DUI suspects, has himself been arrested on suspicion of DUI.
David J. Maloney, 49, was arrested on the morning of May 8, around 3:35 a.m., after a deputy observed his Lamborghini speeding in a 35 mph zone, the Daily Mail reports. Records show the deputy arrested Maloney for driving under the influence and booked him in the Escambia County Jail.
Maloney is well known throughout the Gulf Coast due to his flashy TV commercials, some of which have aired during the Super Bowl.
One ad, which parodies the "Most Interesting Man In The World" commercials for Dos Equis beer, shows Maloney skydiving out of an airplane and slicing through the belly of a shark while wearing a tuxedo.
"Other drivers hide their drinks when he's around," the narrator in the commercial declares, according to the Daily Mail.
In another, Maloney chides: "If you drink and you drive and you hurt someone, don't call me. I'm not going to represent you, I'm not going to help you. If anything, I'm going to be the lawyer going after you."
According to Maloney's website, he and his firm's partners "aggressively pursue cases against irresponsible drunk drivers and the bars, restaurants, and social hosts who serve alcohol to already intoxicated patrons or minors."
The site goes on to state that "[d]runk drivers choose to be irresponsible and every time an impaired driver chooses to get behind the wheel, he or she puts everyone else on the road at risk of injury or death."
In the wake of Maloney's arrest, many people have taken to his Facebook page to decry the alleged hypocrisy of a DUI attorney being arrested for a DUI.
"How ironic that Mr. Maloney who parodies a beer commercial with a tag line don't call me if you drink and drive gets a DUI," one poster wrote.
"Yo, did you personally return your own phone call from jail?" another sarcastically asked.
Jail records show Maloney was released shortly before 10 a.m. the same morning of his arrest, on $500 bond, the Daily Mail notes. No word yet on whether the arrest will affect Maloney's business or standing within the community.
