A 25-year-old Norwegian artist decided “on a whim” to boil and eat his own hip, claiming it tasted like “wild sheep.”
Alexander Selvik Wengshoel spent the majority of his life either on crutches or in a wheelchair because of a deformed hip, so after doctors replaced it a few years ago, he asked them if he could keep it.
Wengshoel says that he wanted to use the hip, along with video of the operation, as part of his art school graduate exhibition, but in order to do that, he had to boil the meat off of the bone, and that’s where he had the idea to eat it.
“I had to boil off the meat to get to the bone, and when I started scraping off the meat, I took a little piece and thought, ‘Why not do it?’” said Wengshoel to The Local. “It’s not every day I will have a piece of human flesh which is mine and which it is possible to eat. So I had a little taste, and then I thought, ‘That’s really nice.’”
Wengshoel went on to eat his own hip meat as a full meal with potato gratin and a glass of wine, because nothing goes better with your own cooked flesh than a side dish and some alcohol.
"First I just had a little taster, but since it tasted good, I made it a full dinner of it," said Wengshoel. "It was a very exciting and stimulating. It was so personal."
“It had this flavor [sic] of wild sheep, if you take a sheep that goes in the mountains and eats mushrooms,” added Wengshoel of the hip meat’s flavor. “It was goaty.”
Wengshoel says that eating his own hip wound up being a full circle moment for him, after years of dealing with pain.
"The hip bone had been such a problem for me for over 20 years, and it was just a way of making it better again,” said Wengshoel. “It had been so hard to have it in my body, and when I took it out, it turned into something else, something romantic."
