North Dakota Newspaper 'The Forum' Refuses to Publish Lesbian Wedding Announcement

Publish date:

Same-sex marriage is illegal in North Dakota, but even some newspapers are banning same-sex marriage announcements, reports

The Forum, published in Fargo, North Dakota, refused to publish a marriage announcement of two lesbians, Allison Johnson and Kelsey Smith, who are getting married in New York, where gay marriage is legal.

Dianna Baumann, The Forum's Celebrations Editor, wrote the couple on Monday morning: "I'm sorry, but at this time The Forum does not print engagement/wedding announcements for same sex couples. We will refund your $25 publication fee. Thank you."

Johnson was shocked by the rejection letter and decided to post it on her Facebook page, hoping to rally people to write letters to the paper.

By Monday night, The Forum'sFacebook page was filled with angry comments and promises of canceled subscriptions. A petition has over 1,500 signatures as of this afternoon.
The paper has officially responded via Facebook and promised to review their policy.

The Forum Editor Matthew Von Pinnon wrote: "This is the second such request in recent months. We will communicate a decision once it's made."
