North Carolina Cop Fatally Shoots Veteran, 74, During Welfare Check (Video)

James Allen, 74, was shot and killed by a police officer in Gastonia, North Carolina, last Saturday night.

According to WSOC, firefighters and police forced their way into Allen's home to check on his welfare after the Korean War veteran's family called authorities.

Allen, who is hard of hearing, had recently undergone heart surgery and his family was worried about him (video below).

Gastonia Police Chief Robert Helton claimed that when police and firefighters entered Allen's home, the senior aimed a gun at them, noted WCNC.

Allen was told to put his gun down, but when he allegedly failed to do so, Officer Josh Lefevers shot him.

"I think that he probably thought somebody was breaking in his house," Allen's sister, Mary Battle, told WSOC.

One of Allen's neighbors questioned why firefighters and police would forcibly enter the home at around midnight.

WCNC reports that the State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
