Noam Chomsky: GOP Agenda A Threat To Human Survival

Professor Noam Chomsky of MIT has asserted that the GOP poses an existential threat to humanity.

The famed linguist and political activist attributes his charge to the climate change skepticism of President Donald Trump and his administration, which Chomsky believes will result in environmental ruin.

On April 13, Chomsky delivered a lecture at the University of Massachusetts Mullins Center during which he warned attendees that the impact of climate change was fast-approaching.

"Anyone not living under a rock should know that the danger is imminent..." Chomsky said, according to the The Massachusetts Daily Collegian. "...We're in the danger of handing the young people a situation that they cannot control."

The 88-year-old linguist listed three examples that he believes spell trouble for humanity's prospects of tackling climate climate: the halting of talks in Morocco to implement the Paris Agreement on climate the day Trump was elected on Nov. 8, the melting of 10,000-year-old permafrost in Canada and the deterioration of the Australian Great Barrier Reef.

Chomsky then stated that the GOP's dismissal of climate change and their policies favoring fossil fuels made them the "most dangerous organization in world history..."

"Outrageous claim, but is it wrong?" he asked the crowd.

On April 24, Chomsky elaborated on his comments during an interview at a church in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

"I mean, has there ever been an organization in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organized human life on Earth?" Chomsky told Democracy Now! "Not that I’m aware of. Is the Republican organization -- I hesitate to call it a party -- committed to that? Overwhelmingly. There isn’t even any question about it."

The linguist cited the Paris Agreement as the best shot world governments have in curbing carbon emissions and avoiding the most disastrous effects of climate change, asserting that Trump was working to undercut the international effort.

"And it turns out that the most powerful country in human history, the richest, most powerful, most influential, the leader of the free world, has just decided not only not to support the efforts, but actively to undermine them," Chomsky continued.

The political dissident pointed to the Trump administration's efforts to dismantle environmental regulations and shrink the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy.

On March 27, Trump signed an executive order to dismantle a series of environmental regulations passed by former President Barack Obama. The directive also called for a review of the Climate Action Plan, the centerpiece of Obama's efforts to uphold the U.S. commitment to the Paris Agreement, CBS News reports.

Trump said the regulations had stymied economic growth in the U.S. fossil fuel industry.

In Chomsky's view, the roughly 200 countries that signed onto the Paris Agreement are now looking to China to lead the effort to curb climate change.

"Here we have a world looking for salvation to China, of all places, when the United States is the wrecking machine that's threatening destruction with all three branches of government in the hands of the most dangerous organization in human history," Chomsky said, according to Democracy Now!
