A man who shot and killed his 14-year-old step-daughter after mistaking her for a thief will not face criminal charges.
An El Paso County, Colorado jury decided this week that Daniel Meade, a decorated Army veteran, does not deserve to be prosecuted for the tragic mistake.
As the Colorado Springs Gazette reports, Meade mistakenly shot Kiana O’Neal, 14, at around 6 a.m. this past December as she snuck into their home through a window.
Meade was never arrested after the shooting, as Colorado’s “Make My Day” law allows home residents to defend themselves from unlawful intruders.
Since Meade shot the girl under the impression that she was a thief, prosecutors appear to think the law exempts him from criminal charges.
