Nissan Delivers New Versa Note to Buyer in Huge Amazon Box

A photo posted on Reddit shows what is probably the biggest Amazon order ever, and the photo has gone viral in just a couple of days.

On Monday, a Reddit user posted the picture with the caption, “What's the largest item you can have shipped from Amazon? Because I think my neighbor just got it."

The photo shows a huge Amazon box on the back of a tractor-trailer, and as it turns out, the delivery was supposed to be kept under wraps until next week, but the Reddit user broke the news first. The box contained a brand new Nissan Versa Note, and Nissan’s Erich Marx explained to AdFreak why the company teamed up with Amazon to offer the home delivery to three lucky car buyers.

“They (advertising agency) mentioned it, and we all kind of laughed and thought, 'Wouldn't that be funny?'" said Marx. "But over the course of a few days, we kept coming back to it and said, 'Why not deliver a car in an Amazon box?' … It's never really been done. I think the visual is pretty hilarious. Everybody knows the Amazon box. We thought it would capture people's imagination. It certainly captured ours."

Nissan had started the promotional campaign in September by announcing that the first 100 people to buy the new 2014 Nissan Versa Note would receive a $1,000 Amazon gift card, and three random buys would actually have the car delivered to their door in an Amazon box. In the end, Nissan decided they would only deliver the car to one person, and that lucky person wound up being located in Madison, Wisconsin.

"Quite frankly it was the enthusiasm of this winner—they were so thrilled and thought it was hilarious," said Marx. "We were all voting for someone in Hawaii. We were like, 'Madison, Wisconsin, in January? That's going to be cold.' But this winner was so into it, we knew it was going to be great."

Nissan filmed Monday’s delivery and had planned to release a video announcing who the winner of the contest was, but Marx says their plan was obviously foiled by the Reddit user that posted the photo online.

"We were filming the video this weekend and a neighbor noticed what we were doing and posted what amounts to a spy photo. The best laid marketing plans, right?” quipped Marx. “We were going to do a press release and a video and this whole thing next week. But the photo got out there, and people started buzzing about it. So we had to scramble."

Nissan spokesman Josh Clifton says that the Amazon car delivery is the first of its kind.

“This is something that we don't believe has been done before in the automotive space where consumers can find a vehicle through a consumer retail site like Amazon,” said Clifton.
