A boy is in critical condition after he was shot in the chest while in his mother’s car in Chicago’s South Side.
The boy, 9, was on the passenger’s side of the car. The mother was driving to pick up her two sons at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday and saw a group of people arguing in the street.
She said she heard five gunshots go off and as she drove away from the scene, her boy said, “Mommy, I’m shot!”
His mother then immediately drove him a mile-and-a-half away to Comer Children’s Hospital.
Relatives told reporters that the boy is “fine” and is expected to pull through.
They believe the boy was shot on accident and was not targeted.
An investigation is underway to determine who shot the boy, and police have not released any information about the fight or the motive.
They taped off the mother’s car as they searched for evidence on Wednesday night.
On that day, 11 people were shot within eight hours on the South Side of the city. Among them were a 15-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man who were both killed. There is currently no one in custody for the murders.
