Mother Reportedly Dumps Her Newborn Baby In Trash Can

A mother in Utah reportedly threw her newborn baby in a garbage can three days after she was born on Sunday. The 24-year-old, who family members say suffers from learning disabilities, reportedly did not know she was pregnant before she gave birth, reports Daily Mail.

Neighbors in Kearns, Utah say they heard something that sounded like a kitten meowing in the trash on Tuesday morning and one person discovered the baby girl. She was airlifted to a Salt Lake City hospital, where she is in critical condition and hooked up to a ventilator.

Alicia Marie Englert, 24, reportedly told police she had left her baby there an hour before the child was found, according to KUTV. As of now, there is no information about where the mother gave birth or why she abandoned her child, but a woman who identified herself as Englert’s sister told reporters she is a “good aunt” who would never have done what she did had she known she was pregnant.

The suspect’s sister added that she “doesn’t think like a 24-year-old.”

The newborn suffered from a lack of medical care after her birth and didn’t have any physical injuries.

Englert is reportedly being booked on a charge of attempted murder at Salt Lake County Metro Jail, reports Good4Utah. The suspect was also taken to a hospital where she underwent both a physical examination and mental evaluation.
