Atlanta police are currently working to track down the mother of a child who abandoned her baby girl on Monday night.
The child was discovered on the front porch of a home on Harlan Road in southwest Atlanta around 5:30 p.m. on Monday. The girl was only a few hours old when she was discovered and still had her umbilical cord attached, policy say. She was wrapped in a Hello Kitty blanket.
Since being discovered, the girl has been nicknamed Baby Harlan by investigators, 11 Alive reports. Currently, she is in good condition and is being observed by doctors before being taken into the custody of the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS).
If a relative comes forward, the baby could be placed into their custody instead of the DFCS, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Police hope to find the mother in order to ensure she has received proper medical treatment.
In Georgia, a safe-haven law ensures that mothers who leave their children at a hospital or medical facility will not be penalized if the child is less than one week old.
Police are asking that anyone with information regarding the case call the Atlanta Police Department Special Victims Unit.
