Teenager's Lamborghini Test Drive Ends In Tragedy

A New York teen is dead after crashing a family friend’s high-powered sports car Friday, police on Long Island said.

Samuel Shepard, 18, of Mount Sinai, N.Y., was test-driving a friend’s 2010 Lamborghini at 2:25 a.m. Friday morning when police said he lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a guardrail.

Michael Power, 49, the owner of the car was in the passenger seat when the crash occurred.

The two were taken to nearby Stony Brook University Hospital where Shepard was pronounced dead. Power was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released, according to Newsday.

Detective Sgt. Michael Fitzharris of the Suffolk police department said the two had met at a parking lot near Power’s home and decided the teen should take the vehicle for drive.

"I think it was probably just a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the kid, and this man chose to give him this opportunity," Fitzharris said.

Fitzharris said no witnesses have come forward to say how fast the vehicle was going when it crashed but said, “I would suspect it was excessively fast.”

The New York Daily News reports the wreck mangled the car that is estimated be worth over $200,000.

Shepard graduated from Mount Sinai High School in June. His father, Gene Shepard, said his son had recently been selected to join the Army Rangers and was supposed to begin serving in October.

After his service he planned to become a police officer.

“He had his whole future planned out,” Shepard said.

Shepard owns a body shop in nearby Port Jefferson Station and said his son had grown up around cars and that Lamborghinis were his favorite.

“Since he's a kid, he's been around cars,” he said. “He was a very talented kid with his hands. He always helped me at the shop. ... He used to see his dad was working hard, and he'd pick up tools and start helping.”

Shepard said he had no idea that Power had offered to allow his son to take the car for a test drive.
