Rep. Tim Bishop: As Many As 40 American Islamic State Fighters Have Come Back To U.S.

A New York congressman claimed during a recent speech that up to 40 radicalized U.S. citizens have come back to the U.S. after fighting overseas for the terror group Islamic State, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation has them under surveillance.

Democratic Rep. Tim Bishop of New York claims that about 100 or so Americans had traveled to the Middle East to join ISIL’s ranks, the Washington Free Beacon reports.

“One of the concerns is the number of U.S. citizens who have left our country to go join up with ISIS,” Bishop said during the speech. “It is believed there have been some number up to 100 that have done that.”

“It is also believed that some 40 of those who left this country to join up with ISIS have now returned to our country,” Bishop said, shocking his Long Island audience on Sept. 12, according to the Daily Mail.

Bishop says that these 40 individuals “are under FBI attention and surveillance. So they are known and being tracked by the FBI.”

According to Time magazine, the U.S. State Department puts the number of foreigners who have traveled to Syria from 50 countries to join several Muslim militant groups, including ISIS, at 12,000.
