A new video shows the moments before an off-duty cop fatally shot a firefighter in Kansas City, Mo.
Firefighter Anthony Bruno, 26, and his wife got into a dispute with a taxi driver over a fare after their wedding reception on Dec. 1, 2013.
Officer Don Hubbard, 42, was off duty but in uniform, working security for the Marriott Hotel when he responded to the fight.
Bruno fled when he was encountered by Hubbard, who chased and tried to arrest him.
“Throughout my entire contact with the suspect, I gave him numerous verbal commands to give me his hands and to stop resisting,” Hubbard told investigators later, according to the Kansas City Star. “In my attempts to place handcuffs on the suspect, he continued to resist and we eventually went to the ground.”
The video shows Hubbard pleading with bystanders to call for help.
Witness Ashley Janzen says her friend took out a cell phone and started recording, KSDK.com reports.
“At the beginning of the situation, we were just thinking, ‘oh, cop, calm down. This doesn’t need to get out of hand,’” said Janzen.
That’s when Bruno fought back, climbing over the officer, then starts punching him on the head.
Bruno flipped Hubbard over and said, “You shouldn’t have hit me,” the officer told detectives.
“He continued to strike me and I started to lose consciousness, and I believed the suspect was not going to stop hitting me until he killed me,” Hubbard told investigators.
Hubbard said he started to black out from the hits. Fearing for his life, the officer fired two shots at the center of Bruno’s body.
Janzen, a critical care nurse, attempted CPR on site. She told police that Bruno pleaded with her not to let him die, but he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
“If maybe he would have just accepted being detained, none of this would have happened,” Janzen said.
Hubbard, who has been with the department for 17 years, was also hospitalized and underwent facial reconstruction after the attack, according to KCTV-5.
Second-degree murder and armed criminal action charges against Hubbard have been dropped.
