Kellie Hurst, a 23-year-old New Mexico high school teacher, was arrested Nov. 3 on allegations that she had sex with a 16-year-old student.
Hurst, who taught at Roswell High School, faces two counts of sex with a minor, Daily Mail reported.
There is no evidence to suggest that any sexual activity occurred on school grounds.
The relationship between the pair reportedly began in September. Hurst and the boy engaged in “what is believed to have been consensual sexual activity at Hurst's apartment,” police said.
In addition, Hurst is accused of sending naked and sexual pictures of herself to the boy.
If Hurst is found guilty, she faces a prison term. She is currently being held on a bond of $10,000.
A 24-year-old former teacher at a Kentucky middle school was sentenced to jail time the day after Hurst’s arrest.
Chelsea Rose pleaded guilty Sept. 21 to having sexual relations with a 14-year-old girl and was sentenced to five years in prison.
Rose will be registered as a sex offender, according to the Paducah Sun. She will not be eligible for parole until she has undertaken a rehabilitation program for sex offenders.
The 24-year-old admitted to inviting the 14-year-old girl back to her apartment and supplying her with alcohol before having sex.
Rose faces a related charge of prohibited use of an electronic communication device to procure a minor in a sex offense. This was related to Rose’s use of Facebook to send the victim sexually explicit messages.
Rose pleaded guilty to that offense in August and will be sentenced Nov. 19.
