Just one month shy of permanently exiting the White House, President Barack Obama has moved forward with renovations to his new Kalorama neighborhood home in Washington, D.C.

Obama has given the nod to an upgrade of the house's security system and the transformation of part of the garage into an office.

Barack and Michelle Obama are moving into the elegant $5.3 million home, located in a posh neighborhood of the federal city, as they await 15-year-old Sasha Obama's graduation from Sidwell Friends School.

The future home of the presidential family will feature a new state-of-the-art electrical system and a new cat walk over one staircase.

Contractors are presently hard at work on the renovations.

Barack and Michelle could sign book deals for an estimated combined $20 to $45 million, the Daily Mail reports.

Michelle, in particular, has signaled she will continue to work on furthering women's education. The founder of the Let Girls Learn program, she told the audience at the United State of Women summit: "I am so excited to continue working on this issue not just for the next seven months as First Lady, but for the rest of my life.

"And it’s going to be good work, because there are a lot of good partners in this room. And I am so looking forward to really diving in," she added.

Barack also spoke of the new upcoming stage of his life in a conference call with Organizing for Action, a group that promotes his agenda.

He said: "I’m going to be constrained with what I do with all of you until I am again a private citizen. But that’s not so far off.

"You’re going to see me early next year and we’re going to be in a position where we can start cooking up all kinds of great stuff to do."

Bill Clinton's former press secretary, Joe Lockhart, and his wife, Giovanna Gray of Glamour magazine, will be the Obamas' landlords.

The 1928 home features nine bedrooms and eight and a half baths.
