Founded by Fred DeLuca and Pete Buck in 1965, the Subway restaurant chain had 16 stores in 1974, and now has 44,000 locations around the world.

Obviously, a great many people like eating at Subway, but Reddit user SubwayworkerUK has gone public with the restaurant’s “dirty little secrets,” reports the Daily Mail.

Claiming to be a Subway shift manager, SubwayworkerUK says to avoid the Chipotle Chicken and Teriyaki Chicken because “it stinks.” The whistleblower elaborates: “Chicken is given a two-day shelf life, once in the counter. However, these two [sandwiches] bypass this and get four days, and can get a little stinky. ... It stinks when it comes out the bag.”

The steak gets a passing grade, however. “Steak is probably the freshest, and safest,” the insider notes.

As with that helpful hint, the remainder of Subwayworker UK’s commentary is mostly positive.

Regarding the best bargain to be had at the store, the nod goes to “Meatball Marinara, Chipotle Chicken, Tikka Chicken, Spicy Italian, and BMT.”

SubwayworkerUK’s personal menu favorite turns out to be a “6-inch hearty Italian, meatball sauce, cheese, toasted. With a ton of salad and southwest sauce.”

If you want to get more than your money’s worth, it is revealed that if you get a footlong sub on flatbread, you will actually get a 14-inch sandwich, instead of a mere 12-inch sandwich. “The way flatbread is made and prepared we give you 14 inches,” it is explained.

About the footlong subs, trivial details are also exposed. For example, the footlong bread is actually 12.1 inches instead of exactly 12 inches. “We have a measuring ruler built into the counter (normally only used for kids packs, 4-inch sandwiches), and our bread seems to always be around 12.1 inches.”

So other than the alleged stinky chicken, SubwayworkerUK doesn’t really reveal many “dirty little secrets,” but what is exposed is arguably worthwhile nonetheless.
