Nashville Police Use Helicopters to Watch Black Friday Shoppers (Video)

Nashville police used helicopters to watch shoppers on Black Friday.

Police said the massive surveillance of residents was necessary to prevent crimes (video below).

“We can support the ground units with an asset like aviation and that gives us a better view of what is going on,” Sgt. Kurt Knapp told WKRN. “We can prevent crime and car break-ins and monitor traffic, especially around Opry Mills and the Nashville West areas.”

The police aviation unit uses two helicopters with thermal imaging technology and night vision goggles for evening hours, noted

"Knowing and seeing that the helicopter is there may make a criminal think twice about doing what they are doing," added Sgt. Knapp. “We fly at about 500 feet above the ground so we have a great view and we can see the entire parking lot and shopping center."

The Nashville police is also telling residents who buy goods online to have them shipped to a secure location.
