Attention Garys of the world: You are officially becoming more rare.
Or at least that’s the positive way of looking at it.
According to Our Baby Namer, the name Gary is becoming nearly extinct.
Nearly 39,000 babies were named named Gary in the 1950s in the U.S. In 2013, that number dropped to 442, the lowest since 1928.
The name Gary now ranks 578 in the U.S. The last baby girl to be named Gary was in 1997.
The epidemic has even spread elsewhere, with the U.K. reporting that the name has been knocked out of the top 100 baby names. Mohamed, Oliver and Noah are among the leading baby names on the list.
The U.K. also reported that 235 baby boys were named Gary in 1996. That number dropped to 28 in 2013. This, of course, begs the question: “What happened in 2013 that made everyone hate the name Gary?”
We’re not sure, but we have our best people working on it.
