Mother Sentenced To 16 Years For Incest With 4-Year-Old

A 40-year-old Kentucky mom will go to prison for 16 years after pleading guilty to sexually abusing and sodomizing a young family member.

Kelly Lynn South, who was arrested by the local police department's Crimes Against Children's Unit in October 2015 for performing sexual acts on a child under the age of 12, accepted a plea agreement that will include prison time and registering as a lifetime sex offender, reports The Courier-Journal.

It is unclear whether or not the child has been taken into protective custody.

A police report states that South, who was 38 at the time of her arrest, admitted that she performed oral sex on him and engaged in other acts, according to WAVE. She was released on a $2,500 cash bond at the time.

"I want to thank Metro Police and our Special Prosecutions Unit for handling this horrific case," Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear said in a Jan. 31 news release discussing the case, according to the Courier-Journal. "It's unimaginable the suffering this victim endured and will endure. This court action held accountable the victim's abuser and brought some justice for the crimes against the victim."

South was originally charged with five counts of first-degree sexual abuse, two counts of sodomy and one count of incest for the crimes, which she committed between September 2012 and September 2015, while the boy was between the ages of 4 and 7.

In Kentucky, engaging sexual contact with a minor under the age of 12 is considered first-degree sexual abuse and is a class C felony punishable by between five and 10 years in prison, according to Find Law. However, statutory incest with a victim under the age of 12 is a Class A felony punishable by between 20 and 50 years in prison, notes Age of Consent.
