A Texas mother has been charged with stabbing her 4-year-old daughter to death.
Laquita Lewis, 34, was in a traffic accident June 18, according to the Houston Chronicle. While being transported to the hospital to treat her minor injuries, she sent a text to the father of her daughter saying that she had "done something bad."
"The defendant told the father that their daughter was no longer alive and was in Heaven," prosecutors said during her arraignment, according to the Houston Chronicle. "She told the father she stabbed the [victim] in the chest with a knife."
Her family reported the messages to the police, who searched Laquita's home and found the body of her 4-year-old daughter covered in blood.
The scene was so gruesome that chaplains were called to help console family members as well as the deputies who found the body.
"It's a horrible situation," said sheriff spokesman Deputy Thomas Gilliland.
Court records show that Laquita has a history of threatening violence and was on probation at the time of the murder. In February, she pleaded guilty to threatening to murder her ex-husband, Donnell Lewis Jr.
She later filed three paternity suits, all of which were dismissed. The first was against Donnell, whom she divorced in 2011. The other two were against a man named Frederick Allen, the biological father of the young victim.
Laquita is currently being interviewed by detectives and has been charged with capitol murder, which means that she could face execution under state law. Officers say that the murder may have been the result of a domestic dispute between Laquita and her boyfriend.
A similar story occurred in March, when a Los Angeles mother stabbed her 6-month-old child with a pair of scissors during a heated domestic dispute.
Maria Mendez, 39, and the father of her baby began fighting when, at some point, Mendez grabbed scissors and stabbed her child in the chest, according to WLS-TV. She then threatened to do the same to the father.
The baby's father grabbed the infant and ran out of the home. The baby was transported to the hospital and was in critical condition. Police say that Mendez is also suspected of burning the child the day before the stabbing.
A protective order was issued for the father and the baby.
She has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and child abuse, as well as one count of assault with a deadly weapon. She was held in custody on $2 million dollar bail and could face life in prison.
