Mother Holding Dead Child At Bus Station Charged

Alexis Washington reportedly stepped off of a Greyhound bus at a bus station in Atlanta, Georgia, during the early hours of July 21, clutching her 2-year-old daughter to her chest and sobbing.

According to the police report, Washington was walking around the city while waiting for a connecting bus before returning to the bus station, where she noticed her daughter was unresponsive. She took the toddler outside to cool her off, WXIA reported. Before a woman called police after talking to Washington, the mother tried to perform CPR.

Washington, 19, told police that the toddler was cold and not breathing, and the child was taken to Hugh Spalding Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival, My Fox Atlanta reported.

It’s unclear how the child died, but Washington has been charged with child cruelty and reckless conduct. Washington was traveling from Greenville, South Carolina, to visit her mother in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Today reported. The incident occurred during a scheduled stop.

The Pitt County, North Carolina, Department of Social Services had an open case against Washington before the child’s death.
