A family’s pit bull terrier killed its 11-month-old son, Carter, while he was playing with his sisters at their upstate New York home.
On Nov.15, Lisa Cittadino called 911 to report the dog had pounced on her son, reports Utica Observer-Dispatch.
The dog, named Diesel, was playing in the living room with her son and his three older sisters, Cittadino told officials. The girls claim their brother had been near Diesel’s food bowl right before the attack.
Carter was taken to a hospital where he died of face and neck injuries, reports Time Warner Cable News. Cittadino told police the 2-year-old dog was never previously hostile and asked for the dog to be euthanized.
Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol said, "Cittadino stated that her back was to the children when she heard her son screaming, along with her daughters, and turned around to see what the problem was. She then saw that Diesel was attacking her son, and she frantically tried to get the dog to release its grip."
The Utica Observer-Dispatch reports the pit bull was taken by the Town of Verona Animal Control and has been euthanized.
The Oneida County Sheriff’s department told reporters during a news conference that they did not find any negligence on the part of the Cittadino family after an examination into the violent mauling.
Authorities are awaiting the autopsy report to make a final determination on any possible charges.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up by one of Lisa Cittadino’s co-workers to help pay for Carter’s funeral and the family’s living expenses.
