A La Plata, Maryland, mother was discovered by police pushing her dead 3-year-old son in a park swing on Friday morning.
A report was made to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office of a woman who had been pushing her child in a swing for an extended period. When officers arrived at Wills Memorial Park around 6:55 a.m., they found the 24-year-old mother pushing the boy in a swing and immediately realized the child was dead, reports WUSA 9.
There appeared to be no signs of trauma to the dead boy. His body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, where an autopsy will be performed in order to determine the cause of death.
Police believe the mother may have been at the park with her dead child since Thursday, reports The Daily Mail.
Authorities are trying to trace the mother’s recent movements “to find out what led to this moment,” said Diane Richardson, a spokesperson for the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
The mother has been taken to a hospital for medical evaluation.
Foul play has not been ruled out and an investigation has been opened.
“It's a very sad and tragic situation for the mother, her family, the officers," Richardson said. “All of us want answers. We're working very hard on that.”
