A mother in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania says she had no idea that her eight-year-old son was dead until three days later when she started to smell a strange odor coming from the third floor of her home.
Kimberly Tutko says she told her husband about the smell on Friday night and sent him upstairs to check on their son, Jarrod Tutko, Jr., who lived on the third floor. The eight-year-old was severely mentally disabled and struggled with autism and Fragile X Syndrome.
When Kimberly’s husband Jarrod came down the stairs, he was holding their eight-year-old son wrapped in a blanket, and he informed the stunned mother that he was dead. Jarrod revealed to her that he had died on Tuesday but didn’t tell anybody about it because of the couple’s five other children who live in the house.
Kimberly immediately called the police and had 38-year-old Jarrod arrested. The father was charged with endangering the welfare of children, concealing the death of a child, and abuse of a corpse. The now grieving mother says she takes care of her daughter full time because she’s autistic, blind, in a vegetative state, and eats from a feeding tube, so the fact that she didn’t realize her son was dead for three days isn’t as strange as some may think.
"My daughter relies on me," said Tutko. "I take care of her and my husband takes care of Jarrod Jr."
The Tutko residence is seemingly very unsanitary, according to pictures PennLive has up. The couple’s other children have been placed in protective custody, and Jarrod Tutko is being held on $500,000 bail.
