Lacey Spears, 27, of Chestnut Ridge, New York, has been found guilty of murdering her 5-year-old son.
Convicted of second-degree murder, Spears faces a minimum of 15 years in prison but could be behind bars for the rest of her life.
Spears’ son, Garnett, died on Jan. 23, 2014, but the cause of his death is still a mystery. Prosecutors argued that Spears put salt in her son’s feeding tube for attention and said it was “nothing short of torture.”
"We are disappointed with the verdict that was rendered in this case,” said Spears’ lawyer, Stephen Riebling. "It is our client's intention to appeal the decision.”
Spears’ defense team alleged that Nyack Hospital failed to treat Garnett properly and caused his death at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital in Valhalla, New York.
Initially, the probe into Garnett’s death focused on the possibility that Spears suffered from Munchausen by proxy. Those who suffer from the rare psychological disorder deliberately harm their children to earn attention. According to The Journal News, prosecutors decided not to present that theory at the trial because they had enough evidence to convict her.
Throughout the duration of Garnett's health struggles, Spears kept a blog documenting their experiences - up until his last hospitalization.
Spears moved to the secluted Fellowship Community, which follows a live-off-the-land philosophy, 14 months before Garnett died.
