A Seattle woman was charged with second-degree murder for allegedly kicking her boyfriend's son to death.
Alicia Goemaat, 20, is charged with the death of 17-month-old Drue Lehto. Goemaat was watching over the toddler as his father, Derek, was out running errands on Sept. 27, Fox 29 reports.
"He just keeps crying, 'She killed my little boy! She killed my little boy!'" Maria Blanco, Derek's mother, told Inside Edition. "We knew the baby as being a healthy, happy little guy. We're in a state of disbelief."
Goemaat told authorities she became enraged when Drue began fighting with her 2-year-old son over a toy, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Goemaat said she kicked the toddler in the stomach with such force that it knocked him to the ground. She allegedly kicked him again before placing him in his playpen.
Seattle PI reports the boy's father tried to administer CPR upon arriving home, but the child died before medical staff arrived on the scene.
An autopsy found the young boy died of abdominal trauma and internal bleeding. The medical examiner's office concluded his death was a homicide.
Blanco said her son is trying to cope with what happened.
"He still drops to the ground in disbelief," she said. "Derek was a good father to that little boy ... That little baby was Derek's life and his light. He was always making sure he had the best."
Goemaat initially denied knowledge of what happened until police arrested her on Oct. 1, reports Seattle PI.
Goemaat is in police custody in Seattle's King County Correctional Facility. Her bail has been set to $1 million.
According to the Child Welfare Information Gateway, an estimated 1,520 children died as a result of abuse and neglect in 2013.
