Mother Charged After Her Daughter Accidentally Suffocates

Tyecka Shanta Evans, 28, was allegedly at a night club when her 3-month-old daughter, Taliya Richardson, was strangled by a plastic bag.

Taliya was found unresponsive in the family’s Ocala, Florida, apartment in the early hours of March 26. Tyecka called for help, but her daughter was pronounced dead at 3:06 a.m. at Munroe Regional Medical Center.

Tyecka initially told police she was at home sleeping while taking care of Taliya, as well as her 9-year-old daughter and her sister's 1-year-old son, while her sister, Toyana Evans, was at the club. Ocala Police Department Detective Scott Rowe said several people came forward and indicated Tyecka was actually at with the club with her sister, as well as her sister’s boyfriend, Quincy Green.

Surveillance footage revealed Tyecka came home around 2:36 a.m., went in to her apartment and indicated that her sister should come inside. They were later filmed apparently running across the parking lot, holding the baby, towards a police patrol car and medical professionals.

According to a police report, Tyecka was confronted with footage of her entering the club with the sister. She then admitted she left her apartment around 1 a.m. to go out with her sister, leaving the children behind.

While the baby was still in the hospital, Tyecka told investigators the baby had fallen asleep on her pillow between 11 p.m. and midnight. She admitted she left a plastic bag on the floor while doing her sister’s hair and said fell asleep on the couch after her sister left for a night club around midnight.

Tyecka claimed her nephew woke her up and she then found Taliya laying face down with the lower half of her body on the pillow and her top half inside the plastic bag.

Tyecka has been charged with manslaughter.
