A mother from North Carolina has been arrested for reportedly helping her 16-year-old son light himself on fire for a viral Facebook challenge.
Janie Talley, 41, reportedly filmed her teen son on July 29 as he doused himself with fingernail polish remover and set himself on fire, reports the Charlotte Observer.
Talley “was present and aware of what her son (was) doing and facilitated the recording,” the police said in a statement.
The boy suffered from minor burns on his chest and neck and witnesses reportedly helped put out the flames.
The video, which was posted to the boy’s Facebook page even after he was injured, came to light after social services officials reportedly received an anonymous tip about it, reports the Daily Mail. After viewing the clip, police were able to identify Talley and arrest her. She will stand trial on Oct. 2 for contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
The fire challenge is just one of many popular online dares for teens. Police say several young people have filmed themselves for the fire challenge and that Facebook has removed the videos so that others won’t attempt the dangerous stunt.
