A woman in Pendleton, South Carolina was arrested after her infant child tested positive for marijuana.
Fox Carolina reports that Kandace Atkins, 19, as well as her 1-year-old child tested positive for the drug and was arrested after the South Carolina Department of Social Services contacted deputies. The incident reportedly happened in June 2015.
Atkins' case echoes a number of other cases that have occurred in South Carolina during the past few months, with several occurring in Horry County in the eastern part of the state.
In October, WBTW News 13 reported that 3 women in separate cases were put in jail for child neglect after each of their children tested positive for marijuana. Two of the women, Shacha York and Sheena Lopez, both 27, were charged with unlawful neglect of a child after both of their children tested positive for the drug at the time of birth, which was in late September for both women. Both infants were placed in protective custody with the South Carolina Department of Social Services.
The third woman, 19-year-old Cheyenne Henderson, was similarly arrested on a count of unlawful neglect of a child. In Henderson's case, the child tested positive for marijuana during a drug test administered after reports that Henderson had abused the child. WBTW News 13 reports that the age of Henderson's child was not released.
In the most recent case, another Horry County woman was arrested on similar charges on Nov. 12. WBTW News 13 reports that 32-year-old Sheila Evans was arrested after her two children tested positive for illegal drugs.
According to the police report, Evans' 4-year-old child tested positive for marijuana while her 6-year-old child tested positive for cocaine. Evans was arrested and charged with two counts of child neglect.
