Police: 3-Year-Old Diagnosed With STD, Mother Arrested

A Mississippi mother was arrested and charged after it was discovered that she failed to get her 3-year-old daughter treatment for a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

The disease was discovered during a medical examination, according to Mississippi News Now. The examination took place after the child had been removed from her mother’s home on Oct. 29 due to an unrelated matter.

Tasha “Nortia” Ford, 30, was arrested and charged with felony child neglect on the grounds that she never sought treatment for her daughter’s illness.

Ford reportedly knew of the disease and did not seek medical attention upon learning of it. It is unclear which STD the child had.

The mother is currently being held without bond and has yet to appear in court.

STDs such as AIDS, herpes and syphilis can be passed from mother to baby at birth, according to Boston Children's Hospital. These babies can develop pneumonia, eye infections and brain damage as a result of their mother's STD.
