Elaine Sunwoo Williams’ 14-year-old daughter wanted a baby, so Williams posted a Craigslist ad asking mothers to drop off their unwanted babies in a box at their Cumming, Georgia, home, according to detectives.
Williams, 47, “was looking for parents who simply wanted to get rid of their baby,” Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Epifanio Rodriguez told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Williams didn’t list a price, but several people reportedly offered to sell their babies.
After a concerned resident called the police about the ad, detectives posed as an interested party and arranged to meet with Williams, Forsyth County News reported.
Williams was arrested on Dec. 4 and charged with domestic-unlawful advertisement/inducement. She remained in jail on a $5,610 bond.
Williams told detectives her teenage daughter “wanted a baby and would get one with or without her help, so she decided to help.”
The 14-year-old is facing the same charges as her mother, but will be charged as a juvenile. She is reportedly staying with relatives.
“Due to the nature of this investigation, we’ve been working closely with the Department of Homeland Security to investigate any human trafficking concerns,” said Forsyth County Sheriff’s Cpl. Robin Regan.
