A Georgia mother reportedly died in the hospital after being accidentally shot by her 4-year-old son, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed on Tuesday.
Dorothy Reardean, 25, and her son were parked in front of their home near Douglas, Georgia, on Aug. 16 when the preschooler found a gun in the car, WMC Action News reported.
Mistaking the weapon as a toy, he picked it up and pulled the trigger. The bullet hit Reardean in the head.
Reardean was immediately taken to the hospital where she was listed in critical condition.
Around 5 p.m. on Aug. 17, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced that Reardean had died about 24 hours after the shooting.
Currently there are no details confirming the ownership of the weapon that resulted in Reardean’s death, but more information will be provided as it becomes available, Valdosta Today reported.
