A Kentucky mother was shot and killed on Mother's Day in front of her 8-year-old son.
The shooting occurred about 3 a.m. May 8, WLKY reported. Angelina Pressley, 27, was walking across a parking lot near her apartment with her 8-year-old son, when a man approached and fired off several shots.
"I heard someone, a female, come down the stairs, yelling call 911 and I was already on the phone by that time calling the cops," Toni Meier, Pressley’s upstairs neighbor, told WLKY.
Pressley’s family told the news station she was on her way home from a Derby Party.
Brandy Gregory, another neighbor of Pressley’s, ran down the stairs when she heard what she believed to be two gunshots, said New York Daily News. Other neighbors tried performing CPR on Pressley, while Gregory comforted the victim’s 8-year-old boy.
"I told him [...], 'You just got to breathe.' I said, 'There's a good chance Jesus is not ready for Mommy. Mommy will be back,’” Gregory recalled. “Sorry, it's still emotional.”
Police said Pressley’s 8-year-old son had gotten her mother a present for Mother’s Day.
“He made the comment that his favorite thing in the world to do was to spend time with his mother, and he was exceptionally excited that night because he had bought her a necklace that he planned to give her on Mother’s Day,” Louisville Metro Police Detective Todd Kessinger told reporters. “Unfortunately, somebody came and shot her right in front of him and he never had the opportunity to give her that necklace.”
The boy was able to give police some details on the suspect, but not enough to release a description. The motive is still unclear.
“We made every effort to reach every person that was there, that could have witnessed the incident, but today we're asking that if there's somebody that has information that we didn't speak to or if there's somebody that knows something to go ahead and reach out to us and call us," Kessinger added.
