A Russian woman died after being "boiled alive" while working at a confectionery -- otherwise known as a chocolate factory.
Natalia Nemets, 36, was cleaning a tank at the factory when molten caramel suddenly began pouring out, Viral Thread reported. Local reports stated that Nemets was "boiled alive" by the hot caramel.
Nemets' coworkers noticed something wasn't right when they couldn't find her at her assigned station. They later found her with her legs poking out of a caramel-filled tank.
“She did not cry, no other noise was heard,” a colleague told local media, according to a translation done by The Independent. “She was cleaning the mixer when the caramel suddenly began to flow into the bowl. She got boiled alive, this is true.”
“The caramel was removed from the giant bowl and only then was her body was taken out,” the coworker explained. “Besides the fact that it was boiling caramel, in the bowl there are moving blades that constantly mix the caramel.”
The labor commissioner is currently investigating two potential causes of death. One is that Nemets tripped into the tank, another is that the high temperatures caused her to faint, the Daily Mail reported.
Nemets is survived by her spouse and 10-year-old son, Ivan. Her sister, Yulia, told local media she has taken custody of the child.
Several social media users were shocked by the news, as seen on the MommyPage Facebook post about the story. Some called for better safety regulations at the facility.
"I think a certain chocolate factory needs to put some safety measures in place," wrote one Facebook user.
"Where were all the safety precautions?" asked another. "Lock out tag out for when equipment is being worked on?"
"The third. This place needs shut down and everyone in charge needs fired and replaced," another user suggested.
This is now the third reported death this year at the same factory in Russia. A similar incident occurred in a different chocolate factory when a woman, Svetlana Roslina, fell into an industrial mixer containing boiling chocolate, Metro reported.
The 24-year-old tried to escape, but was ultimately crushed to death. One witness reported seeing Roslina dumping ingredients into the mixer at the time, while another said she was attempting to retrieve her lost cell phone.
“She was minced. Only her legs were left,” an unnamed source told Metro.
“The girl was dragged in when she was trying to empty a sack," added another.
Roslina left behind a husband and two children, both of whom were under the age of 5 at the time.
