An Ohio woman reportedly killed her three sons by suffocating them because she didn’t want them to suffer.
Brittany Pilkington, 24, is on trial for the deaths of her sons Niall, 3 months, Gavin, 4, and Noah, 3 months. They were all killed between the summer of 2014 and August 2015, WDTN reports.
Prosecutors say the married mother of four killed her sons out of jealousy at the attention they received from her husband.
Pilkington reportedly admitted in a police interview she smothered two of them with a blanket so they wouldn’t suffer.
“I put it over his nose and left,” Pilkington said of the blanket she used on one of her sons. She told the detective questioning her that she held the blanket over her son.
In her taped confession, she said she was depressed and concerned about her sons becoming abusive toward woman, according to Daily Mail.
“I wish I would have did it to myself instead,” Pilkington can be heard saying to police on the recording.
When asked about the death of Noah, Pilkington claims she woke up on top of the child in bed after falling asleep.
“I felt like he was gone, he was a little cold but I didn’t know if he was really gone or not,” said Pilkington in the interrogation, reports CBS News.
Pilkington’s attorney claims she was tricked into giving the interview without a lawyer present.
“These were not statements that were coerced but were given voluntarily,” Logan County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Eric Stewart said.
Now it’s up to the judge to decide whether the jury should be allowed to watch the recording of the interview.
Pilkington has pleaded not guilty to three counts of aggravated murder. Her trial is set for February 2017, if convicted, she could face the death penalty.
The couple’s 5-year-old daughter is in the custody of family members. Pilkington’s husband is not considered a suspect in his children’s deaths. He was earlier convicted of impregnating Pilkington when she was 17 and below the age of consent. The 44-year-old husband was Pilkington's mother's former boyfriend.
