A Michigan mother is accused of helping teens use weed killer to burn a massive penis into the football field at Bedford Senior High School.
The Temperance field was defaced over labor day weekend, causing up to $20,000 in damage, according to court documents.
A 50-year-old woman, her 16-year-old daughter and a 17-year-old friend are facing felony charges of malicious destruction of turf or soil. The woman is also facing a misdemeanor charge for contributing to the delinquency of children.
“It’s ridiculous. I’m sure the individuals involved probably had no idea the impact, but it’s just absolutely ridiculous,” Superintendent Mark Kleinhans told the Detroit Free Press. It left a “very inappropriate, disgusting symbol” he added.
“We are going to prosecute to the full extent of the law,” he said. “This isn’t a little prank misdemeanor. This is a felony.”
"It was a lot more than a prank given the significant damage and the disruption of school activities," Assistant Monroe County Prosecutor Leah Hubbard told the Detroit Free Press.
Hubbard said events had to be moved after the destruction of the field and "there have been countless hours of volunteer time to get the field back in playing condition.”
Hubbard said none of the suspects have a criminal history.
"It's an unfortunate incident with unintended consequences," said Tim Churchill, an attorney for the mother and daughter.
Churchill says the mother never set foot on the field and that her daughter did not partake in damaging the field.
The 50-year-old was arraigned Friday and released on bond. She is not being named to protect the identity of her daughter, who is temporarily remanded to the Monroe County Youth Center. Churchill said the girl has a 4.0 grade point average. She is expected to appear at a hearing Tuesday.
The 17-year-old has not yet been arraigned.
"I think what started out maybe in general as a prank turned out to be a very serious matter," Churchill said.
