Boy Makes Mom Proud By Not Getting To Class On Time

A Santa Fe, Texas, kindergartner who was late to school made his mother proud when he chose to say the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer outside the school instead of running inside to class.

In a Sept. 1 Facebook post, Heather L Nelson shared what her son Royce Thompson did at Wollam Elementary School.

“PROUD MOMMY ALERT," Nelson wrote. "I had dropped Royce off in the line..by the time I drove up he was doing this.. I couldn't really tell what he was doing and I was saying 'Royce..go..go' as kids walked around him. Well he didn't budge and I thought what is this child doing?”

As she tried to get Royce to go to class, an officer stationed outside of the school’s entrance told Nelson that his stalling was for a good reason.

“The officer said ‘mom he's doing good, he stopped for the Pledge of Allegiance (and then she puts her hand over her heart to show me) and now he's praying'," Nelson wrote. “Since they do not have prayer in schools he says a little prayer silently and that's exactly what he was doing. I was so proud that he stopped when the Pledge of Allegiance came and stood his ground and did not move as the other kids were going in and then took time out and prayed and did not even care or think twice about it. This is such a beautiful picture.”

Royce’s story has since gone viral, being shared and/or commented on nearly two million times, according to KRIV. A news team in China has even contacted Nelson about her son's actions.

“I said a prayer,” Royce said in an interview with KRIV, before reciting the prayer he said that morning before school: “Thank you God. Thank you for giving me a wonderful day.”

The officer who witnessed Royce say the Pledge of Allegiance and his prayer thought his act was "awesome."

“I couldn’t believe that he acknowledged that that was a moment of, you know, you need to stop and do the pledge and he just did," officer Cibby Moore of the Santa Fe Independent School District said. "He just ignored all the kids around him and kept doing it. It was awesome,”
