Mom Arrested For Torturing 7-Year-Old Son

A Chicago mother has been arrested and charged with torturing her 7-year-old son.

According to Cook County prosecutors, Caroline Woods, 24, kept him locked in a closet, beat him repeatedly, and fed him infrequently, reports the Chicago Tribune.

The case came to light on Oct. 9, when someone called the police after seeing the diaper-clad boy outside the high-rise condo where he lived, bleeding from a cut over his eye. He was taken to be examined by a doctor, who remarked that the boy had more physical injuries than he had ever seen on one person, prosecutors allege.

During a hearing on Oct. 11 at the Leighton Criminal Court Building, Woods was ordered to be held without bail. Charged with aggravated battery, it is alleged that she beat the child numerous times over two years with an extension cord, a baseball bat, and a pole.

The son testified that his mother and her boyfriend kept him in a closet for prolonged periods, and that he was forced to use the closet as a bathroom. The boyfriend has not been arrested or identified, notes the Daily Mail.

He also told of being placed on a hot stove by the boyfriend, and having his genitals being burned with a curling iron. In addition, he was reportedly malnourished, and was fed a diet consisting mainly of protein shakes and cans of okra, according to what he told police.

Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. described the mother’s actions as “depraved acts,” referring to her directly as “a danger to society,” reports the Daily Mail.

An investigation into the allegations of abuse and neglect has been launched by the state Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). They are investigating the mother’s boyfriend in addition to herself.

DCFS took custody of both the 7-year-old boy and his 2-year-old sister on the day of the arrest, a spokeswoman for the agency said.
