An Oklahoma woman and her daughter have been arrested after authorities learned they had an incestuous marriage.
According to court records, Patricia Spann, 43, and Misty Spann, 25, got married in March in Comanche County, the Daily Mail reported. Court records also revealed that Patricia previously married one of her sons, Jody Calvin Spann, in 2008.
Patricia’s marriage to Jody was annulled in March 2010. Her most recent marriage to Misty was discovered by the Department of Human Services in August during a child welfare investigation inside the family’s Duncan home, KFOR reported.
In Oklahoma, marrying a close relative is considered incest regardless if a sexual relationship exists or not. An arrest warrant was issued for Patricia and Misty Sept. 2. They have both been charged with incest and booked into Stephens County Jail on $10,000 bonds each.
According to an arrest affidavit, Patricia told investigators she had lost custody of her three children, who were then adopted and raised by their grandmother. Patricia reunited with Misty in 2014. Police say Patricia is Misty’s biological mother.
The mother-of-three also told police she didn’t believe she was breaking any laws by marrying Misty because her name is no longer listed on her daughter’s birth certificate.
Both women could be facing up to 10 years in prison.
