MMA Fighter Stops Burglar With 'Mercy' Beating

An alleged thief found out the hard way that he had chosen the wrong home to break into when he encountered the homeowner, MMA fighter Dan LaSavage.

LaSavage was spending the first night in his new Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, home when, after putting his 3-year-old daughter to bed, a strange noise woke him from his sleep.

“As I walked fast, I turned around, and it was right here,” LaSavage told WISN. “He had blue latex gloves on, and I was like, ‘What are you doing here?’ He popped up and had like crazy eyes and was like ‘Ahhhahhh.’ He didn't, like, say any words.”

The would-be thief, Richard Melville, 47, is a career criminal, according to police.

“He came head first like this and as he came through, I dug my arm underneath, and I put my hand through,” LaSavage said. “Basically, within five to six seconds of a tight choke like that, you're going to pass out."

“As he passed out, I grabbed him by his jacket, and I dragged him,” LaSavage, who was once known as “Savage” in the ring, said.

LaSavage took a picture of Melville passed out on his porch when police arrived.

LaSavage, the owner of Combat Corner, has made learning self-defense his business.

“If people can do that for themselves, it will put them in a much better situation than just hoping someone else is going to protect them or save them,” LaSavage said.

LaSavage said he only used the amount of force necessary to stop Melville.

“I did beat him pretty good, but I beat him with mercy,” LaSavage said. “I just wanted to make sure he wasn't going to do what he did here, and he'd never come back. I guarantee he'll never come back.”

Melville is charged with felony burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia — police found a crack pipe on his person.

In September, a Brazilian MMA fighter fought back against a thief who tried to swipe her cell phone, America News reported. Monique Bastos managed to place the thief in a choke hold for 15 minutes until police arrived.
