The body of a 14-year-old Texas girl who went missing on June 19 after going out for a walk with her dog has been found.
An Arlington landfill worker discovered Kaytlynn Cargill's body in a landfill a few miles away from her home on June 21, reports WFAA.
Shortly after, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner confirmed it was Kaytlynn.
The cause of her death, and why she disappeared in the first place, still remains a mystery.
"I didn't hear any yells and it happened right behind my balcony," said neighbor Zach McDaniel, who last saw Kaytlynn tie her dog's leash to a fence and ask friends to keep an eye on him. "I heard no yells, no helps, no nothing."
Even police were initially flummoxed by the case. They refused to authorize an Amber Alert, adding they did not believe foul play had been involved.
Now, however, authorities know that isn't the case.
"We will pursue every lead, leave no stone unturned and bring the person or persons responsible for Kaytlynn's death to justice," Lieutenant Kirk Roberts said.
In the meantime, authorities request those who have any further information contact the Bedford Police Department at 817-952-2440 or the Tarrant County Crime Stoppers at 817-469-TIPS.
On June 22, Kaytlynn's 100 schoolmates and friends held a vigil in honor of the teenager at Central Junior High, where she attended the seventh grade.
A friend also set up a GoFundMe account to raise $25,000 for Kaytlynn's family. As of June 23, strangers and loved ones alike have donated a little over $16,000.
"Kaytlynn is from my hometown, a safe and wonderful place to raise a family," wrote one donator. "I'm so sorry to hear this and wish to express my deepest condolences to her loving family."
"My families prayers go out to you for your loss," added another donor. "This is tragic and we know that God will give you the strength to make it through. I cannot say that I would be as strong as you are being right now. God's speed."
"Your family has been on my mind and in my heart for days now," chimed in a third person, who also donated. "I don't know you all but I am terribly sorry for your loss. I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through. Prayers for the entire family."
