'There Are No Words To Describe It': Minnesota Family Of 5 Found Dead, Police Suspect Murder-Suicide

A Minnesota family of five was found dead in their Greenwood home on Lake Minnetonka Thursday — victims of what police say is an apparent murder-suicide.

Police found the bodies just after 12 p.m. on Thursday while conducting a welfare check on the family, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Friends, coworkers and school officials all reportedly said they had not seen or heard from the family for a couple of days.

“Officers responded to the residence on Channel Drive in Greenwood and unfortunately, found an entire family of five deceased,” South Lake Minnetonka Interim Police Chief Mike Siitari said, according to KARE News.

Police have not released the names of the victims, but the house is known to be the home of 45-year-old Brian Short, who founded the website Short — who purchased the house in 2011 for $2 million, according to research done by the Star Tribune — lived in the home with his wife, Karen Short, and their three children, Cole, 17; Madison, 15; and Brooklyn, 14.

An administrator at posted a message to the site’s community bulletin board Thursday night saying Brian had died.

“It is with great regret and a very heavy heart that I have to share some very sad news with you,” the messages reads. “There is no easy way to say this. We just found out this afternoon that Brian and his family have passed away. The news is calling it an apparent murder-suicide, but this has not been verified by the authorities and details have not yet been released.”

Neighbor Doug Plocek told the Star Tribune he couldn’t believe such an apparently horrific crime occurred in his typically quiet neighborhood. He added that the Shorts were good neighbors.

“The neighbors went into shock,” Plocek said. “To me, there was no indication whatsoever how that could have happened.”

Investigators from the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department and Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office worked into the night Thursday, processing the crime scene, according to the Star Tribune.

The Hennepin County medical examiner’s office will conduct autopsies. Police have not yet released how the family members died.

Officers who first arrived on the scene reported finding the five bodies in different areas of the house. One victim was found in a bedroom. A second was found in the garage, two others were found in the home’s basement and the fifth was found in a lower-level bedroom, the Star Tribune reports.

Siitari called the the scene “unspeakable” and “complex” and told reporters that it will take a number of days to sort through the evidence.

“There are no words to describe it. … It’s a tragedy,” he said, according to the Star Tribune. “This is a tough one to handle.”
