A Minneapolis, Minnesota, man was arrested and charged with raping a 10-year-old girl in the hallways of an apartment complex.
The incident, which occurred on October 4, reportedly began when Ahmed Hersi Abdi followed the girl into an elevator. Both got off on the third floor, and the man extended his hand as if to offer a handshake. The girl shook Abdi’s hand and he refused to let it go. He then began to rape her, police said.
Witnesses reportedly heard screaming in the hallway and found the girl crying, before flagging down an off-duty officer. According to KSTP, the girl was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment. 34-year-old Abdi was identified based on the girl’s description as well as surveillance footage.
The man was previously convicted in 2003 of trespassing, in 2003 of disorderly conduct and in 2012 of public urination. A number of charges against him, including assault charges in 2011, were dismissed due to “mental deficiency” and incompetency to stand trial.
Abdi was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual assault for the rape, and faces up to 30 years in prison and $40,000 in fines if convicted.
