Milwaukee police said this week they have arrested a 25-year-old man who they believe was caught in a surveillance video (shown below) trying to abduct a 7-year-old girl on July 30.
Police credited tips from the public — called in after the department released the surveillance video Saturday — with leading to the man’s arrest, WITI News reports.
The short video shows a man speaking and interacting with two children before picking one child up, cradling her in his arms, and running a few yards before setting her down and running off.
The 7-year-old girl’s mother, who was not identified by WITI, said her daughter remains slightly shaken by the experience but is otherwise doing fine. The mother added that she too is shaken.
“I’m still shocked,” the woman said. “Like, why my baby? She said he didn’t touch her in the wrong place or nothing. He just was like — she said he grabbed her, cradled her and tried to run with her.
"I don’t even want her outside anymore like, at all.”
Police have not released the identity of the man they arrested Saturday.
But Gail Jones, who spoke with WISN News, said the man is her grandson. She did not give his name but said he suffers from mental illness, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
She added that he told her that the girl in the video is his daughter.
“I took her because her mama's not taking care of her,” Jones said her grandson told her.
“I was going to bring my baby to you granny so you could help me take care of her,” he added, according to Jones.
Jones told WISN that she believed he told the police the same story, but she has no idea if her grandson is really the father of the child.
She said her grandson struggles because of his mental illness but he has no criminal record.
The man remains in custody. Authorities told WISN the district attorney will review the case later this week.
