A Pennsylvania middle school band teacher has been suspended after being accused of sleeping with a 14-year-old student. Now, her attorney is seeking leniency for her bail because she is pregnant.
Bridgett Szychulski, 31, has officially been charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault and indecent assault. The sexual relationship allegedly occurred in 2012, and the alleged victim reportedly told investigators that the two connected on a “mental level.”
The sex allegedly happened on at least three different occasions; two sexual encounters reportedly occurred in school, and a third encounter happened in her car after the teen snuck out of his house. The sex in the middle school reportedly occurred once in the teacher’s office and another time in a storage room.
After a judge set Szychulski’s bail at $500,000 unsecured, her attorney William Goldman asked for leniency because she is currently pregnant. Currently, Szychulski lives in Philadelphia with her husband and their one son.
Superintendent Dr. David Weitzel acknowledged that they suspended the teacher and have banned her from all district sites while the investigation continues.
“The district will not tolerate the type of conduct that is alleged in the criminal complaint, and we will do everything possible to be supportive of the student and his family," said Weitzel. "I also commend the individual who anonymously alerted the Pennsylvania Child Abuse Hotline (800-932-0313) after speaking with the student, and encourage everyone to do the same without hesitation if ever there is suspicion of child abuse."
Szychulski was reportedly a teacher at Doylestown’s Lenape Middle School for seven years before being suspended due to the sex allegations.
