In brief: Microsoft (MS) and Toyota have formed a strategic partnership on a global platform for telematics services through the Windows Azure cloud computing platform.
The companies plan to begin including MS Azure under this collaboration in select Toyota vehicles starting in 2012. The Azure Cloud Computing platform utilizes Internet-based computing.
The system will be a part of Toyota's Media Service company, a subsidiary similar to GM's OnStar. It will first be introduced in Toyota's plug-in electric and hybrid vehicles next year.
The goal is to establish a complete cloud-based platform by 2015 to provide affordable telematics services to Toyota customers around the world, linking vehicles to smart grids, cellular providers, and more.
And so ...
Microsoft works closely with several auto manufacturers including Ford, General Motors and now Toyota.
