Valentine’s day is just a few days away, and as many people scramble to make plans and buy gifts, some are just dreaming of a divorce.
One Michigan attorney is giving away a special Valentine’s gift for these people: a free divorce.
Walter H. Bentley decided to give away one free divorce because many people are stuck in failed marriages, and with the mounting financial troubles that come with splitting up, many can’t afford to shell out the $3,000 an average divorce costs.
“The winner will be chosen based on the most compelling and convincing story as to why they should be the winner. The divorce is limited to an uncontested divorce with no or minimum child custody issues,” he said.
So far, the contest has had more than 500 people apply. Luckily, the contest doesn’t end until tonight at midnight (E.S.T).
“We’re looking for someone truly struggling to move forward. Maybe someone who’s overcome some obstacle - a foreclosure, say. Maybe they’re struggling to make ends meet, and they don’t have enough money for a divorce.”
Bentley said it might not be the most romantic holiday gift, but he imagines spending Valentine’s day with someone you don’t love is even less romantic.
“What makes Valentine’s Day even hard for people that are in that situation that are in a bad marriage and you’re living with the person, and it makes Valentine’s Day a very, very tough day for people - when you’re living with someone you no longer want to be married to,” he said.
He said he came up with this unique idea after one of his student’s had a break-up celebration. They threw a party to celebrate her divorce and return to singledom.
Bentley will sift through the applications and choose a winner. He said he is looking for a heartwarming person who truly deserves to be free from their marriage.
